Stash Report

OK, well. Now's the time where I have to decide exactly what the "rules" are for my stashbusting. Can I count it busted when the flimsies are done, or does it have to be quilted and bound before I can count it busted.

First of all, I finished two pillowcases this week, so that's two yards done.

Secondly, I finished three flimsies...and since I'm sending them to Mary Johnson and Heart Strings to be quilted, I think I'm going to count those. That's five yards used.

BUT!

I got a package with 12 fat quarters in, so three yards in.

Seven out and three in. I can live with that.

Also, I'm sending out some of my older fabric to be used in backings for Heart Strings quilts, but I don't think I'll count that (mostly because I don't want to go through it and add it all up, lol).

To see what everyone else is up to, make sure you visit Judy's blog.

Hi Tamera, I think you can pretty much set your own guidelines for counting, as long as the fabric has permanently left your stash. I think it's all right to count backings for donation quilts, too. I'm looking forward to reading your Stash Reports in 2010! Happy Holidays and all the best for the new year.

You could always estimate the backings!

You are the rule maker for your reports and whatevery you decide for yourself will work.

Great job on all those tops!! I love to donate blocks but I haven't had a whole top to give away yet. Maybe a good goal for me in 2010?
Merry Christmas

One important thing is to be consistent with your method. I count when I cut the fabric for a project because it is out of the stash. I also like to piece and don't always get the darn thing quilted for a while, so if I waited to get it completely finished, I would not be reporting anything!!

Oh, and don't stress yourself out over this since it is supposed to be fun!

I keep a pad of paper on my cutting table and count my fabric as I cut it. Then I have a spread sheet in Excel where I keep track of what I'm making and using so I don't count the fabric twice. It's also great because if you want to make a quilt more than once, you can look to see the yardage of each quilt. I have a lot of counted things like bindings and backings for tops that have yet to be quilted. But it's out of my stash and that's what matters to me.

I agree with the others. Just have fun on sewing, the numbers always seem to work out. I choose to count when I have a finish, for me it makes me want to finish something. I have been working on a Grandmother flower quilt for over 2 years now, I know I'll have some sweet little number to share soon. Just finished my dgs frog quilt- except for the label oops, yesterday.

Ahh-yes, its a "make your own rules" thing. I count yardage as it's completely done. I could make tops until I was dizzy!! And I don't count gifts "in" as something I would have bought. But I do count stuff going out because that IS something I bought.

Heartstrings is a great project, probably my most favorite one of all!!
